Hawaii has lost a beloved son and vibrant talent. David Hekili Kenui Bell affectionately known as “Shave Ice Gu”passed away i His passing was confirmed by his family in a touching announcement shared by his sister, Jalene Kanani Bell, on June 15th.
A proud Hawaiian actor, Bell was best known for his recent role as the “Big Hawaiian Dude” in Disney’s 2025 live action Lilo & Stitch. He also appeared in Magnum P.I. and Hawaii Five-0, and was a familiar voice in the islands, heard in commercials for Kona Brewing Company, Waiakea Water, and as a warm presence at Kona Airport.
In addition to his screen appearances, Bell was honored as the 2025 Pele Awards Overall Winner for his standout work with Kona Brewing Hawaii recognition that solidified his mark on the local creative community.
Tributes from friends, colleagues, and loved ones describe Bell as funny, generous, and deeply devoted to his family. His sister fondly remembered how he united the family for the premiere of Lilo & Stitch just weeks before his passing, a final memory that now means even more.
